The Journey Begins!

I am a single mom to my lovely daughter and sister to an amazing guy. My youngest brother Karl came into my life when I was five years old. His autism was diagnosed in 1973, when he was three years old; when doctors were just beginning to figure out what autism was. Today, in 2018, I am his legal guardian, his advocate, and his watch dog. I took after my mother, who fought long and hard to get Karl an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) when the acronym was barely known in public schools. As a result of her hard work, Karl remained in school till he was twenty-one and today he is verbal because of her hard work and persistence. He is extremely intelligent, using a language and manner of joking those know him well come to understand. He will not  be able to hold a regular job, nor is he a savant, he is just another guy- an autistic adult, 50 years old, loved by his family, a gentle giant who relies on me to make sure he is loved and cared for.

I will be sharing the resources, tips and routines that have worked for my brother as an adult living in my home and later in a group home. I hope you find this blog useful and inspiring. Come and vent, share your experience, join us as we all make this journey together.
